Muffins are complete strangers to many people in Italy. Actually, these cakes are not typical of Italian culinary culture, but are a delicious new-entry that, in my opinion, everyone should try at least once.
What are then muffins?
Muffins recipes appeared in XIX century in Americans cookbooks first, and Canadians soon after. They have become very common in the UK as well, where it is possible to find them everywhere. Recently, muffins have started to appear in Italy too, but only in few cafés and, generally, only in the two classic versions with chocolate or blueberries.
In reality, muffins are extremely adaptable and can be made with almost any ingredient.
Muffins strong point is that they are cheap, easy and fast to bake. This makes them a perfect alternative to junk food, high in sugar and with low nutritional value. On the contrary, home-made muffins offer the right balance between carbohydrate, protein and fat. Besides, many recipes also contain fruit, vegetables, oat, nuts and bran. Whit flavours covering the whole spectrum of sweet to savoury, there is plenty of choice for everyone!
